Description: Very finely carved hardwood male and female standing figures, wearing floor length robes. Beautifully carved serene facial features, the male having a mustache and goatee, long sideburns, and his hair pulled into a top knot with a right side hair lock. Painted black with red details. His robe slightly open, allowing for the natural opening up the front of the figure. The female wears a similar robe, and is depicted with beautifully carved facial features. Her hair is pulled back into a long ponytail. Both are in all over exc. cond. Mounted separately on matching custom bronze covered bases. In the mid-nineteenth century, Haida men and women made regular journeys to Victoria, British Columbia, five hundred miles south of their homeland on Haida Gwaii, also known as the Queen Charlotte Islands. The woman likely acquired her garment there. Beautiful examples.
