Description: |
Mold-made pottery lamp from Roman North Africa. It has a rich, deep red color, especially around the nozzle, where it has darkened from use. It has a sunken discus, two pour holes on either side of the central design, an unpierced lug handle, and double spouts. The design on the discus of this lamp is a Chi Rho, one of the earliest forms of Christogram. It is surrounded by relief arrows and circles. The outer circle has many small designs of this same style. The handle and one spout have been restored. Light wear on surface commensurate with age. Nice preservation of motifs on discus. |
