Description: |
A very large, carved wood effigy in the form of a hornbill, which is sacred to the Poro Society as the first bird to give itself to humankind for food, thus sustaining life. The hornbill also mates for life and the male nurtures the female while she tends to the offspring. It is one of the five primordial creatures created by God and represents the Senufo ideal of nurturing as the Senufo do with young men through their initiation ceremonies. This was worn atop the head in Poro Society processions. Red, blue and white pigment over light colored, medium weight wood. The stylistically carved bird has a large belly, long, downcurved beak with relief, bulging eyes, squared wings and feet upon the integral domed helmet. Some paint loss, a few chips, else exc. cond. Included is a lucite laminated poster sign from the exhibition with image of this piece and information about the Poro Society. |
