Three matching carved wood figures, representing the three kings, Melichior, Gaspar and Balthasar, each with articulated arms and separately carved head. Intended to be clothed, the bodies are well formed and proportioned but appear to be intentionally unfinished. Painted and defined from mid thigh down, each wears mid calf length, integral boots. All have inset glass eyes, two are caucasian , third is negro who holds a crucifix and symbolic gold mirror, all have moustaches. Originally with gessoed and painted heads, lower arms and lower legs, now with chips and losses and continual flaking. Each stands on an old wood base. |
