Important Cypriot carved limestone head of a king or god from a monumental sculpture, his austere face with long beard of overlapping spiral curls and drooping moustache, the hair arranged in two rows of corkscrew curls and surmounted by a wreath of laurel leaves. Cf. Vermeule, “Cyprus”, fig. 8 and p.21. Heads of this type could be conventionalized portraits of the Achaemenid rulers of Cyprus. Ancient losses around the top of the laurel wreath. Some restoration to chin portion of his beard, nose restored and a few minor ancient losses. Custom red granite base. |
