Description: |
An untraditional carved and painted wood face mask having perforated eyes and mouth. Animal hair tufts have been inserted along the upper rim. Incised and painted classic decorative elements on both cheeks with a goatee form around the mouth and chin. Perforated at the temples for attachment. Minor high point wear and some normal loss to the surface paint, otherwise intact, overall exc. cond. The origin of this mask appears to be Northwest Coast in the style of the decorative elements, however, it does not seem to conform to any known classical type. Furthermore the wood is quite dried, old and patinated and this is not of recent manufacture. |
