Description: |
Canoe prow utilitarian ornament designed to protect the passengers of the vessel physically as well as from harmful spirits. In large v-form, with a central ovoid mask, having open eyes and circular mouth, horn perforated through nasal septum, flanked by extended angular planks and crescentic form above, mounted on a wood framework lashed together with rattan fiber and cassowary feathers along some edges. Some losses, left extension composed of separated pieces. For a very similar example see : "The Arts of the South Pacific" by Jean Guiart, illustrated on page 131 as illustration # 97, Basel Museum. |
