Description: |
Helmet mask, commissioned and used by the womens society, the elaborate hairdo rises in four curved fin-like ridges surmounted by a pyramidal talisman on the two center ridges. Rows of braids cover head, with a band of squared talismans and animal horns between hair and rows of fat around neck. The gentle face bears small curved eyeholes, narrow nose, scarification on cheeks, and thin relief lips. Very old dark brown patina with rough encrusted surface from layers of applied palm oil and black “njui” coloring. Light losses around rim, Custom base. |
