Description: Fine pecked carved mask of mottled green hardstone having classic Olmec facial features. Depicted with a bow shape upper lip, open mouth, relief central brow, drilled dimple under his chin and a slot cut in the center top ridge. Small tab type ears, with drilled perforated lobes and nostrils. Drilled perforations through the temples for attachment. Red-brown deposits in the eyes and mouth, possibly as a result of originally containing pyrite insets. Intact. A beautiful example. Custom metal base.
Provenance: Private CA. collection, acquired from Robert Morris Fine Art, Santa Fe, NM., 2007. Ex. Michael Robins collection, Santa Fe, NM., late 1960s-2007s., acquired from Raul Kamfer, late 1960s. Ex. Kamfer collection, 1950s-1960s. Kamfer was a well known dealer in the 1940s-1960s.
