Carved gray-green stone maskette depicting a shaman in transformation to a were-jaguar with a broad open toothy mouth with a projecting snout and having heavy brows encircling his drilled recessed eyes. Two drilled perforations at the top of his head and two under his ears, for attachment. Some scattered traces of red surface pigment. Overall excellent ancient surface patina. Some normal minor rear rim and highpoint roughness, otherwise intact, overall exc. cond. A beautiful quality example. Custom bronze base. This mask and Olmec mask, of similar material, were most likely found together in the same tomb and possibly carved by the same ancient artist. Custom bronze base. |
