| Description: |
Large pottery seated adolescent with splayed legs, resting both hands on his bent knees, arms held in a power position. Depicted with very expressive facial features having open toothy mouth, dimpled cheeks, slightly slanted eyes with perforated pupils, perforated ear lobes, and arched browline. Dome type hairdo and sideburns painted black with a large geometric carved decoration on the left side of his head, possibly representing a jaguar paw. Overall cream slip surface with remaining traces of reddish-pink highlights. Overall scattered root marks and surface deposits. Right leg, head and arms reattached with restoration over and around some of the break lines, lower portion of his left leg restored. An excellent quality and very expressive example. Mr. Dockstader, in his letter, further states: “ I have been informed that this figurine has been examined by Mr. Robert Sonin, of New York City, whose laboratory is very active in such evaluations, and whose opinion I trust, I also understand that Mr. David Joralemon, a young archeological student at Yale University, and a specialist in Olmec studies, has examined the specimen and accepts it as authentic.” |
