Description: Fine carved basalt of deep bluish-green with black speckles. Beautifully carved with fine proportions, depicting a seated obese male figure having a large round belly overlapping his crossed legs, hands held to the side of his stomach. Elongated head, looking slightly upwards, and wearing a tightly fitted cap. Fine relief carved, expressive facial features, and depicted with a double chin, parted bow-shaped lips, pierced ears, one piercing open. Intact, exc. condition. Possibly a depiction of a then living shaman. A top quality, beautiful example.
Provenance: John A. Stokes Jr. collection, NY. Acquired July 3, 1989 by descent from O. Herrero. Originally acquired from Raul Kampfer, Kampfer Gallery. 1960s. Published: The Olmec World - Ritual and Rulership, #29.
