Description: Pottery bird effigy vessel, seeming to have alighted on the circular base, this bird's long, finger-like talons grasp the sides. The head is turned up, as if in song, to balance the spout, which is flanked by the tail feathers. Simply modeled, the bird is incised with a minimum of detail: the eye, inside corner of the beak, and a single line, branched at the top, to indicate the spine of the tail plumage. No more is needed to evoke the spirit of what must be a song- bird, the symbolism is associated with shamanic flight. Some overall remaining cream slip on a gray pottery ground. Repaired from approximately six large original pieces with restoration over the break lines, some restoration to the upper rim. A very rare type.
Provenance: John Stokes Jr. collection, acquired January 1964. Ex. Miguel Covarrubias to Rosa Covarrubias. Ex. George Pepper. Published in: “The Olmec World - Ritual and Rulership, p. 183, #60.
