Description: |
Exceptional blue-green jade pendant, carved on both sides with a profile head of a dignitary and having individual symbolic-ritual images, including a stylized bird carved in relief on the reverse side. The front depicts a dignitary wearing an openwork fancy headdress and disc ear ornaments. A zoomorphic head is incorporated in his hairdo, probably a jaguar. He is depicted with very expressive powerful facial features, parted lips with front teeth. suspension hole drilled in the upper portion of his headdress. Excellent ancient surface patina. Some almost invisible natural stable fault lines within the plaque, but intact, exc. cond. A rare and beautiful example. |
