Description: |
Carved onyx hunchback figure in bowl, said to have been found together. The surfaces of the figure and bowl are eroded with losses, it is safe to assume they were once as highly polished. The vessel is filled with a now hardened cinnabar, which was frequently used in the Formative period burials, liberally covering the body and funerary objects. Buried caches of objects at La Venta were deposited in layers of cinnabar and red sand. The placement of the hunchbacked dwarf in the vessel may be an effigy burial. A rare and very interesting example. Some ancient loss to the interior of the figure’s left leg, and having overall surface erosion. The bowl has eroded side walls and surface, with losses. |
