| Description: |
Carved tan-olive serpentine stone standing figure. The pedestal or abbreviated throne on which the figure stands has been drilled from the bottom, leaving a hole for mounting on a staff or other support. Standing squarely, the figure's legs are separated by a large drill hole: the hands either are joined in front or hold a ritual object. A delicately incised iris is preserved only on the left eye, and the features of the face plaque set in the center of the wide headband, recalling that on the niche figure of La Venta Altar 5, are faint. A groove around the head separates the headband from the caplike arrangement, with its knob or top knot from which incised radial lines extend in the front and a headcloth falls to the shoulders at the back. If the headband is not taken as a separate unit, the figure appears to be wearing an elaborate helmet. A semicircular line incised under the chin may be the abbreviated description of a necklace, pendant, or collar line. A band or sash, possibly of a tunic, wraps over the legs, crosses the body behind the joined arms, and extends to the armpits. The grid incised on the upper body and face may represent a painted or tattooed design, or scarification. Horizontal lines extend from either side of the mouth onto the headcloth and from the corners of the eyes. The pedestal or throne and the headband with face plaque point to a figure of some importance, but the other distinctive details of costume and grid elude interpretation and a more specific identification. Excellent ancient surface patina. Intact, exc. cond. Old hardwood base. |
