Description: |
Missippian figural effigy vessel with rotund kneeling body, thin limbs, and prominent chest. Human effigy vessels of this type have been excavated from late Mississippian sites in the southeast. The majority of them are female. Most are also hunchbacks, whether male or female, and usually have a protruding backbone. Hunchback people were probably regarded as marked by the spirits to be a shaman or to hold some special position vis à vis the spirit world. Nose and left nipple restored, and a 1” area of resurfacing on her right collar bone, otherwise intact. Rare. |
