Lot# & Name: 018. Olmec Seated Were-Jaguar Figure Wearing Shoulder Cape
Estimate: $6,000-$9,000
Current High Bid: $25,000.00
Auction Closed(Final Price) $25,000.00

Category: Pre-Columbian Art
Sub Category: Mexico - Olmec and Pre-Classic Cultures
Culture or Country: San Lorenzo or La Venta.
Period: Middle Pre-Classic Period: 900 - 300 B.C.
Size: 7”H. x 4-1/4”W.

Description: The figure retains a certain blockiness: the stone is not greatly undercut or perforated. The jade was highly polished. Veins of what may be iron run through the stone. This were-jaguar is in a seated pose with the legs seemingly crossed, though only the knees are rendered, the feet obscured by the arms, which are thrust straight downward before them. The hands are fisted and lack physiognomic detailing. His headdress is a close-fitting cap with chin strap and a broad headband with a central, portal-shaped medallion. In addition to his helmet-like cap, he wears a smooth-edged cape, the back of which has not survived. Natural roughness or ancient damage to the front top of the head. An exceptional example.
Provenance: Private East Coast collection, acquired by the current collection in 1998 from the Merrin Gallery, NYC., old Merrin label affixed to the back.
Shipping Fee:
National: $75.00
International: $169.00 (This is approximate and for Postal Service. Prices may vary, especially for private carriers such as: FEDEX, UPS and BAX).
