| Description: |
Fantastic large “nkisi” power figure carved in form of an ancestor with powerful face having cowry shell eyes, wide nose, sneering lips with traces of embedded teeth, and tiny concavities along median ridge of forehead, around face, and along small pointed breasts. An animal horn is inserted in top of head, with a headdress of animal pelt threaded with spheral beads, animal horns. The long neck is wrapped with beads, and the abdomen which is built up organic empowered material with teeth, two bundles composed of fiber, wood, fabric and enclosed ingredients. The waist is wrapped with two small wood figures, animal bone, and fabric loincloth. Smooth burnished medium brown patina on face and arms, white crusty patina on neck, and dry patina with deposits around body.
Generally used in magical operations serving the well-being of an individual or the community. Many of the power figures also related to persecution of sorcerers and witches. The figures received sacrifices and offerings, rubbed with oils and other substances, and their users were required to respect certain rules and prohibitions. |
