Description: |
Roosevelt redware pottery (Tonto Polychrome) effigy bird jar with geometric designs. The polychromes of the Salado tradition, Pinto, Gila, and Tonto were characterized by a white slip on the interior of bowls and a red slip on the exterior. Carbon pigments predominated. Distinctions among the three are based on characteristics of the slip and varied use of red in the design. Salado polychromes were among the most widely distributed painted types in the prehistoric Southwest. They have been found as far north as the Zuni area, as far south as northern Mexico, are present in Classic period Hohokam sites on the west and are occasionally seen as far east as the Rio Grande Valley. Some areas of touchup to the painted geometric decoration, otherwise intact. A rare type. |
