Category: Antiquities
Sub Category: Classical Antiquities - Greek
Culture or Country: Eastern Mediterranean.
Period: Early Hadrianic, ca. 120 - 130 A.D. to Flavian Dynasty, ca. 68-96 AD.
Size: 6”H. head, 11”H. overall with base.

Description: This very finely carved marble portrait depicts a young woman with very realistic and expressive facial features, enhanced with an aquiline nose, large almond-shaped eyes, and heavy browline. The most striking aspect is her elaborate coiffure of undulating curls that frames her forehead and is bound in a turban of coiled braids around the crown of the head. The distinctive turban coiffure worn by this woman allows her to be dated to the Hadrianic period. The wide high plaited turban is seen in Imperial portraits of the period such as those of the Empress Sabina (the wife of Hadrian), Matidia Minor (half-sister of Sabina) as well as others of the Hadrianic court. The creation of such hair styles however was arduous and time consuming. Therefore, it is not surprising that only women of the leisured classes would have had the staff and time for lengthy hair dressing sessions. Overall scattered mottled brown surface deposits. Mounted on an exceptional 18th century base composed of various color marble, with a red jasper top plate. A few very minor ancient edge flakes on her hairdo, otherwise intact. A beautiful example.
Provenance: NYC. collection. Ex. Fortuna Fine Arts, NYC. Ex. property of a central London gallery, acquired on the UK. art market. This item has been checked against the Art Loss Register database.
