Fine two piece (lidded) cast bronze box mirror, decorated in high relief depicting Pan seated on a rock outcropping, holding a cane, having a lower body of a goat and upper human body, depicted with a long beard and fully curly hairdo. He faces and winged eros in flight, looking back towards the satyr. Interior of the rear compartment lid is decorated with a concentric circle design, exterior is a flat mirror back which reveals scattered areas of a gilt surface, under a strong blue-green surface patina. A 3” area of the lower rim is restored, not affecting the decoration, otherwise intact, exc. cond. A rare and beautiful example. Custom bronze base. |
