Description: |
Agate intaglio carved depiction of a soldier standing facing right, wearing armour, helmet and cloak. With his right hand he holds a spear, while he places his left hand above the fire of a burning altar in his famous gesture of courage and virtue. The scene symbolizes the power of Roman Virtus. Nice choice of zoned agate. Repaired diagonal break line, which is invisible to the naked eye. The stone is set in an antique metal frame, probably period to the intaglio. Missing the original upper suspension loop. A large and impressive example. Custom lucite display base. |
