Description: |
Large polychrome decorated pottery olla having a wonderful design scheme in which the top of the angled jar has stylized circles within diagonal bands representing the carapace. Below the carinated break in the vessel's body, the turtle face and outstretched legs suggest it is swimming. On other painted vessels, the turtle form is reduced to the head and legs, like kennings, or the whole body is drawn schematically. This jar is exceptional in showing the entire creature with the carapace as a handsome geometric design. The same carapace circle motifs occur on carinated turtle effigy jars illustrated by Lothrop (fig. 125) and Labbé (fig. 125).
Labbé, Armand J. 1995. Guardians of the Life Stream: Shamans, Art and Power in Prehispanic Central Panama, The Bowers Museum of Cultural Art, Santa Ana, pg. 118, figs. 123 and 124; pg. 120, fig. 125 - these are described as effigy turtle carinated jars with turtle head and swimming front legs, but only the polychrome tops of the jars are illustrated. They are probably like the carinated effigy turtle jar in Lothrop.
Lothrop, Samuel Kirkland, Coclé: An Archaeological Study of Central Panama, Memoirs of the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, Harvard University, vol. VIII, Cambridge, 1942, pg. 125. fig. IIh. Overall strong scattered mineral deposits on the surface. A very minor 1/4” probe hole in the base, otherwise intact, exc. cond. A top quality, beautiful example. |
