Description: Carved gray schist stone sculpture of a standing Buddha performing twin miracles. The figure’s head is carved with carefully arranged hair, and is backed with a halo, and with flames emerging from his shoulders and water waves from his feet. Well carved facial features, deep almond shape eyes, arched brows arched brows, rounded cheeks and elongated ear lobes. Between his eyebrows is an urna, which represents the third eye of wisdom. The figure wears a full length sanghati, nicely accentuated with folds, giving the figure a sense of movement. Standing on an integral plinth decorated with a relief scene of two kneeling worshipers, facing an altar. The scene is framed by two columns. According to Buddhist tradition, the twin miracles happened with flames emerged from his shoulders, and water from his feet, symbolizing purification, and the water symbolizing calming of his emotions. Excellent ancient surface patina. Some ancient loss to the right side of his halo, missing his separately carved right hand, otherwise intact, overall exc. cond. Custom base. A beautiful example.
Provenance: Private NYC. Ex. Apollo Art Auctions, London. From the collection of a London gentleman; formerly acquired in the early 2000’s in France; previously in 1970’s European collection.
