Category: Pre-Columbian Art
Sub Category: Mexico - Olmec and Pre-Classic Cultures
Culture or Country: Las Bocas.
Period: Early Pre-Classic Period: 1200 - 900 B.C.
Size: 4-3/4”H. x 2- 1/4”W.

Description: Buff color solid pottery standing figure with pink-orange pigment highlights. Depicted with a fleshy abdomen and thighs. The flexed arms and hands are held across the chest. The proportions are naturalistically observed, if somewhat exaggerated, and the finely modeled face is individually and delightfully characterized. The puffy breasts, heavy thighs and red painted coiffure suggest that this is a female figure. Such Las Bocas figurines are more lifelike and expressive than comparable examples from Tlatilco. Overall scattered mineral deposits on the surface. Head and both arms reattached with restoration over the break lines, missing tips of both feet. Some surface erosion on the backs of both legs. A very expressive example. Custom bronze base.
Provenance: Private NYC. collection, acquired 2003 from Rebecca Stokes, NY. Ex. John A. Stokes, Nyack, NY., acquired in 1974 from Alfonso Sosa. Bibliography: The Olmec World - Ritual and Rulership, The Art Museum, Princeton University, 1995, fig. 239f. Exhibitions: The Olmec World - Ritual and Rulership: The Art Museum, Princeton University, December 16, 1995 - February 25, 1996. The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, April 14 - June 9, 1996.
