Description: |
Fine tanware pottery rabbit / duck effigy vessel. Xochipala artists endowed their ceramic animals with the same vivacious charm and immediacy as their human figures. This vessel was cleverly modeled as a realistic rabbit on one side and a duck on the other, by bending the rabbit ears backward to become the duck's bill. The two animals share the same eyes. The chest and lower body are decorated with carved linear designs. This is a unique example of such dual representation. Overall excellent ancient surface quality and patina. Intact, exc. condition save for duck’s bill which is a restoration. A truly great example of Olmec ceramic art. Metropolitan Museum of Art long term exhibited. |
