Category: Pre-Columbian Art
Sub Category: Mexico - Olmec and Pre-Classic Cultures
Culture or Country: Las Bocas.
Period: Early Pre-Classic Period: 1200 - 900 B.C.
Size: 3-1/2”H. x 2- 3/4”W.

Description: Solid pottery seated figure with an ivory slip with a few remaining traces of red pigment. Depicting a seated figure with one leg extended and the other flexed with foot resting on the knee area. The right hand is pressed against the chest and the other touches the shoulder. The head is shaven save for a crest of hair on one side. The orbits are in the "eyeless" style of many Las Bocas figurines. The fleshy open mouth is in classic form. Over all, the proportions are naturalistically observed, if somewhat exaggerated, and the modeled face is individually and delightfully characterized. Such Las Bocas figurines are more lifelike and expressive than comparable examples from Tlatilco. Overall scattered strong mineral deposits on the surface. Repaired from approximately six original pieces with restoration over the break lines. A rare and beautiful example of Olmec sculpture. Custom bronze base.
Provenance: Private NYC. collection, acquired 9/12/2003 from Claudia Stokes, NY. Ex. John A. Stokes, Nyack., acquired from Alfonso Sosa in 1974. Bibliography: The Olmec World - Ritual and Rulership, The Art Museum, Princeton University, 1995, fig. 239d. Exhibitions: The Olmec World - Ritual and Rulership: The Art Museum, Princeton University, December 16, 1995 - February 25, 1996. The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, April 14 - June 9, 1996.
