Category: Pre-Columbian Art

Culture or Country: Olmec regions.
Period: Ca. 800 - 400 B.C.
Size: 9-3/4”H. x 10-7/8”W.

Description: Carved gray basalt sculpture depicting the head of the front-facing earth monster with a gaping mouth. A supernatural being that represented the living, animate earth to ancient cultures. Very expressive facial features including a large head cleft, four corner openwork mouth with wide relief lips, slanted eyes and arched brows. It is face-on rather than rendered in profile. It was possibly placed against a mound with its open mouth, symbolically leading to a chamber inside, symbolizing a portal to the underworld. It likely represented the source of life and abundance, as well as sacred rituals associated with them, ideas and practices that pervaded subsequent Mesoamerican civilizations. Excellent ancient surface patina. Some restored losses along the reverse edges, and a restored chip on the top of the left lobe. A rare and powerful example.
Provenance: Private FL. collection. Ex. Private California collection, acquired 1960’s from Harold Wagner, CA., to Gregory Wilcox-Rogers by inheritance.
Shipping Fee:
National: $85.00
International: $185.00 (This is approximate and for Postal Service. Prices may vary, especially for private carriers such as: FEDEX, UPS and BAX).
