| Description: |
Fine hammered molded sheet silver mask depicting a stylized human face, having a wide nose, fine bow shape lip, narrow eyes with openwork pupils, arched brows with incised details. Tiny pierced holes along the edges for attachment. Overall excellent blue-green surface patina with scattered deposits. A small minor upper edge tear, and a couple of very minor imperfections, otherwise intact. Custom tapered hardwood base. A rare and beautiful example.
The Liao Dynasty dates are 916 to 1125 CE. It was a Khitan-led dynasty that ruled over parts of what are now Northeast China, the Mongolian Plateau, and Korea. Some sources give a slightly earlier start date of 907 CE, coinciding with the collapse of the Tang Dynasty, but 916 CE is the date of its formal establishment. - AI |
