Description: A profoundly expressive and rare pottery figure, this seated baby commands attention through both its sculptural presence and its emotional gravity. This object feels less made than encountered. Modeled seated with legs folded beneath the body, the figure rests one hand on the foot while the other reaches upward to the head, a gesture that reads as contemplative, vulnerable, and deeply human. The form is powerfully compact, with fleshy limbs and a rounded torso rendered with remarkable sensitivity to weight and volume. The sculpture is not intact, bearing visible age-related fissures and losses consistent with antiquity, yet its presence remains undiminished. If anything, the survival of such expressive detail despite centuries of burial enhances its authority and rarity. Professionally repaired with some chipping along visible break lines and light resurfacing over others. Some light surface wear as shown, but, otherwise, excellent presentation with impressively preserved detail. TL holes beneath right leg, right arm, right vent hole, and right posterior cheek.
Provenance: Private Lake Forest, Illinois collection; ex. private CA. estate, acquired before 2015.
