| Description: |
A group of four carved stone canopas in the form of llamas or alpacas, their compact bodies and simplified features reflecting both devotion and utility within Andean ritual life. Small stone figurines such as these were among the most common sacred effigies used across the highlands of Peru and Bolivia, where they were often buried in corrals to ensure protection, prosperity, and the fertility of herds. Each figure is carved with a cylindrical cavity along the back, once filled with offerings - including animal fat, coca leaves, maize kernels, and seashells - presented to the gods in acts of reciprocity. Produced into the Post-Conquest period, these objects speak to the enduring strength of Indigenous belief systems and pastoral identity in the Andes.
Good condition. Most petite is missing head and has remnants of animal fat in cavity. All have nicks, chips, and abrasions commensurate with age. Otherwise, three are intact and all have liberal remaining detail.
