Fine large deangle mask, with trade cloth covered headband embroidered with cowry shells, the ovoid face with relief vertical ridge along forehead, slit eyes, and projecting full lips with small wood teeth inlay. Scratches on cheek, losses on lips, surface wear. Dark brown patina, worn patina on reverse. Fischer and Himmelheber note that Deangle, also known as bonagle, is a character whose names mean 'joking or laughing masquerade', indicating that this is a friendly, attractive spirit, one who makes men joyful when he appears. |
