Description: A round-bellied dog rendered in burnished redware, its body forming a hollow vessel that doubles as sculpture and container. Alert upright ears, a tapering muzzle, incised eyes, and sturdy splayed legs support the rotund, possibly pregnant torso. A spout rises from the back, marking the form as a functional vessel. The slip is mottled with gray firing clouds and earthen mineral deposits. Tail spout and left ear are reattached with visible breaklines. Heavy mineral and manganese deposits across the surface and root marks. The fattened dog effigies of Colima are among the most beloved artifacts of West Mexican shaft-tomb culture, which flourished in the modern states of Colima, Jalisco, and Nayarit. The dogs portrayed are the xoloitzcuintli, a hairless breed long associated with the god Xolotl, who in Mesoamerican belief accompanied the dead through the perils of Mictlan, the underworld. Dogs were both companions and food sources in life, and their interment reflects that dual role: a provision for the journey and a psychopomp for the soul. The rounded, almost comic plumpness of these figures is a deliberate aesthetic convention, celebrating abundance. Buried in deep shaft-and-chamber tombs, these vessels were preserved largely intact, accounting for their relative survival. *This lot will not be on view at the New York exhibition, and will ship from Colorado*
