| Description: |
A tall, tapering cylinder of orange-pink marl clay, coil-built and hand-smoothed, rising to a wide mouth ringed by a short, everted rim. Below the lip runs an encircling wavy groove, a vestigial memory of the raised, scalloped ledge-handles that once girdled such vessels and that survive here only as an ornamental ripple imitating cord or scallops. The undecorated body swells before drawing to a rounded base. Vessels of this class held oils or unguents and accompanied the dead into their graves, part of the funerary equipment of Upper Egyptian communities along the Nile.
Intact and in excellent condition overall, with fine burnished surface.
