| Description: |
Egypt, Predynastic Period, Naqada culture, ca. 3900 to 3100 BCE. Tapering beaker rising from a narrow base to a wide, open mouth. Body burnished, hand-built without the wheel. Lower two-thirds iron-oxide red; rim and interior black, characteristic of Predynastic black-topped redware, produced by firing the vessel mouth-down in ash to limit oxygen at the rim while the lower body oxidized red. Used for holding food or drink; this type is frequently found in Predynastic burial contexts.
Professionally repaired with restoration over break lines; all done expertly and very difficult to detect. Expected age wear with nicks and pitting in areas and remains of adhesive from previous display on underside of base. Otherwise, very nice presentation with lustrous surface and scattered earthen deposits.
