| Description: |
“Okoroshi” mask, from the southwestern Igboland, a water spirit that would have descended from their home in the clouds to earth during the rainy season. Carved with two bent horns on top of the head, the sides framed by a scalloped relief edge, and inset teardrop shaped concavities around the rounded forehead and around the mouth. High arched brows rise above the open ovoid eyes, and the mouth with defined teeth is encircled with open lips that resemble a beak. Encrusted with layers of deposits, dark brown patina. Right rim edge lost, surface wear. Custom base.
Among the southwestern Igbo (Agwa Igbo), in festivals and masquerades in honor of Owu, the water spirit, most of white masks are female. A notable exception is Agiriga, a male mask, recognizable by its pair of angular horns that rise up over head. (Cf. Cole & Aniakor, "Igbo Arts", UCLA, 1985: 196, fig. 310). |
