Small mask with articulated jaw, carved with a distinctive headdress composed of a thick crest with a tab shaped bill or projection. The small delicate face with narrow lentoid eye openings, small nose, puckered lips, relief scarification in front of the angular ear lobes. The white painted face is dramatically contrasted with the deep black pigment having shiny resinous patina. Abraded wear along the rim, surface wear, some white pigment loss.
See a related mask with similar headdress in Sotheby’s "Art of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas", 21 May 2024. Lot 74.
Historically, masks were worn in ritual performances for funerals and when yams were planted and harvested. More recently they appear at Christmas and New Year celebrations and to welcome important visitors (National Museum of African Art, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., USA). |
