| Description: |
Hardwood carving representing the buffalo, a symbol of strength, courage, authority, and royal power in the Bamun Kingdom. The imposing mask is distinguished by sweeping curved horns carved with deeply ridged panels, a broad, exaggerated forehead bisected by a raised central ridge, widely spaced lentoid eyes retaining thick applications of white kaolin, flared nostrils, and a wide open mouth revealing delineated teeth. Traces of red pigment remain preserved within the ears. The surface exhibits a rich variegated patina, darkened around the horns and mouth, with accumulated deposits throughout that attest to age and ceremonial use. The tops of the horns have been reglued, the tip of the left horn is lost, and a small section of the lower lip is missing. The worn areas have developed a darker, well-aged patina consistent with the mask's history of use and preservation. |
