| Description: |
Large hand-built pottery storage jar, the broad ovoid body rising to a flared rim, with a pair of lug handles at the shoulder. The vessel is painted in black over a reddish-buff slip with bold spirals, zigzags, and linear motifs characteristic of Xindian culture. Vessels of this type originate from the Gansu corridor and Tao River Valley of northwestern China, a region where, unlike contemporary central Chinese cultures, the potter's wheel was not adopted; pottery was instead hand-built by coil construction, often giving vessels a slightly asymmetrical form. This jar is notably large for the type.
Professionally repaired and restored with modern infill and overpainting. Visible infill on the interior to reinforce the fissures. Many fissures and cracks radiating across the interior, but nearly indiscernible on the exterior due to infill and overpainting. Approximately 90% or more original material. Overall rare and great preservation.
