| Description: |
Standing horse modeled in earthenware with sancai glaze, in cream with amber-brown runs down the mane, muzzle, and tail, the body retaining traces of red pigment over a molded saddle and saddlecloth. The figure stands foursquare on a rectangular slab base. Horses of this type were made as mingqi, ceramic tomb furnishings buried to serve the deceased in the afterlife, reflecting the high status of the horse in Tang society; the detailed saddle and bridle mark this as an elite mount rather than a working animal.
Repaired and restored from many pieces, with infill and overpainting along breakines. Breaks are primarily along the body and legs. TL testing hole on the underside of base.
