Lot# & Name: 624. Chinese Bronze Hu Wine Vessel, Han Dynasty, Garlic Head Form
Estimate: $1,000-$1,500
Current High Bid: $1,900.00
Auction Closed(Final Price) $1,900.00

Category: Asian Art
Sub Category: China - Early Periods
Culture or Country: China.
Period: Han dynasty, ca. 206 B.C. - 220 A.D.
Size: 8.3"W. x 13.2"H. x 7.9"D.

Description: A cast bronze wine vessel of the hu type, with a globular belly tapering into a long neck that flares to an everted trumpet mouth, raised on a splayed ring foot. Two taotie mask escutcheons, modeled in relief along the shoulder, hold loose suspension rings, functioning as both lifting devices and symbolic guardian motifs. The surface bears a mineral encrustation of malachite green mottled with earthen ochre, consistent with burial. The elongated neck and bulbous body reflect the so-called "garlic head" (suantou) profile associated with the Han repertoire. Vessels of this type were used in the ceremonial pouring of wine at ancestral rites and banquets, and served as furnishings for both domestic and funerary contexts. Subtle unevenness to foot creating slight wobble; still capable of standing independent of support. Weathering and abrasions to surface as shown, all commensurate with age. Otherwise, intact and excellent with rich patina and encrustations throughout. *This lot will not be on view at the New York exhibition, and will ship from Colorado*
Provenance: Private Colorado collection; ex. Los Angeles, California collection, acquired 2025; ex. Alexander Barakat collection, Los Angeles, California, 2023; ex. Barakat Gallery, Beverly Hills, California, between 1995 and 2005.
