| Description: |
Hollow cast bronze crowned and bejeweled bodhisattva, probably depicting Guanyin (Avalokiteshvara), seated in dhyanasana with the right hand raised in vitarka mudra (teaching gesture) and the left resting in the lap. The elaborate tiara containing a small seated Amitabha Buddha, the pendulous earlobes with floral earrings, beaded necklace with central jeweled clasp, and softly cast robes with incised scrollwork are all hallmarks of late Ming dynasty 16th-17th century. The serene, slightly smiling face with downcast eyes, broad forehead, and gilt facial highlights is consistent with late Ming Buddhist sculpture, where only traces of the original gilding typically survive on the face and recessed areas. The high foliate crown with a central niche enclosing a small Amitabha identifies the figure as Guanyin, the Bodhisattva of Compassion. Intact. |
