| Description: |
Solid cast bronze standing figure holding a celt and a bottle, depicting the Hindu god Shiva (often identified as a pre-Khmer, Lopburi, or Dvaravati-era Shiva) or a Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara from ancient Thailand. In Southeast Asian art history, particularly regarding bronzes discovered in Hoards across Northeast Thailand (such as the famous Prakhon Chai Hoard), the unique combination of these specific attributes carries a precise iconographic meaning: The Celt (Axe/Hatchet): In this cultural context, the "celt" represents a stone or metal axe head (parashu), which is a primary weapon and attribute used to symbolize Shiva's power to sever ignorance and destroy evil. The bottle represents a kamandalu (an ascetic's water flask). This object holds the nectar of life or sacred water, representing purification and spiritual practice. Attachment tangs intact. Overall rich bluish-green surface patina. Missing both left forearms and a piece missing from the rear right base corner. Old custom hardwood block base.
