Description: Carved greenstone breccia figural bowl fragment depicting a beautiful male head of a dignitary with a fancy stepped-segmented headdress with a raised top crest, secured with a segmented chin strap. Relief carved very expressive facial features, lips parted and relief carved bar-type stepped rear hairdo. All decorated with drill holes around the headdress and sides of his neck. A portion of his upper arms form the partial rim of the bowl. Excellent ancient surface patina with some remaining traces of red cinnabar highlights. A rare and beautiful example. Old lucite block base.
Provenance: John Stokes Jr. collection, acquired July 1989, by descent from A. Herrero. Originally purchased from Eddie Avila Ortiz, 1960’s.
