Description: Carved light green serpentine stone seated figure, associated with meditation and shamanism, the seated crossed-legged position of this figure forms a coiled base, and has well carved facial features. The top of his head is unusually flat, and depicted with an ambivalent expression, which is is associated with rain, an interpretation reinforced by the band held across the stomach with the crossed-bands sky symbol. Excellent ancient surface patina. Some ancient loss to the top of his head, otherwise intact. Mounted on a hardwood base.
Provenance: John Stokes Jr. collection, acquired March 1970 from Raul Kampfer, Kampfer Gallery. Published in “The Olmec World - Ritual and Rulership, p. 244-245, #143. Exhibited: The Art Museum, Princeton University, 12/16/95 to 2/25/96. Exhibited: The Museum of Arts, Houston, TX., 4/14/96 to 6/9/96.
