Description: |
Large Ostrich egg form with groups of three vertical rows of punctuate incisions. Glossy silverish-olive color with extensive fire clouds. Seed jars, so named for their shape, appear late in Caddo pottery (1400–1500 A.D.), when potters favored restrained, elegant shapes, such as seed jars and cylindrical bottles. The seed jars were deliberately marked with fire clouds, achieved by an oxygen-reduced firing technique, and this example was further decorated with punctuate tracking. Tiny pin hole pock mark on the lower body, otherwise intact, exc. cond. A top quality example. |
