Description: |
Cast gold votive plaque depicting a standing male figure holding a long shield or macana sword club, with two projections along the top edge. Wearing a fancy necklace and a wide band crown, and holding an animal headed atl-atl in the one hand. Wearing hoop earrings which serve as suspension loops. Missing lower leg portion, otherwise intact, excellent condition. A high quality, beautiful example.
According to Warwick Bray, The Gold of Eldorado... these figures... “are usually found buried in pots or thrown into lakes. Like the ‘ex. votos’ offered to Catholic saints today, their purpose may have been to thank the gods for past help, or to serve as gifts in anticipation of future services.” |
Provenance: |
Emily & Walter Mead Collection, Santa Fe, NM., active late 1950’s - 1970’s. (Mead Paper Corporation family). cf. Warick Bray, Gold of El Dorado, #160. |
