Description: |
Iron throwing knife used by the Kirdi and Matakam people, with bifacial blade of sinuous form with crossbar between blades, and handle covered in braided animal hide. Stipple incised patterns on blade. The lug on lower curved blade and on the pommel would have been used to attach straps by equestrian fighter. Some nicks on blade. Dark patinated blade, warm brown patina on hide. Custom base.
“The sengese has acquired a cultural significance beyond its utility as a cavalry weapon. It is an object of personal prestige, carried by the Matakam man when he appears in public or at social gatherings (Blackmun 1990:12). He may also carry a sengese when walking alone, especially at night, for defense.” - Hurst, N., “Ngola: The Weapon as Authority, Identity, and Ritual Object in Sub-Saharan Africa” 1997, p. 14. |
