Description: |
Figural basket hook figure carved of medium density wood, in form of an anthropomorphic figure with convex head, large open triangular eyes, flared nostrils, open mouth, and relief ridged column starting below extended tongue, continuing along chest, and hollowed angular torso. The figure stands with small gripped feet on a short semicircular base with engraved face on front and back, and pointed hooks on side for hanging bags. Medium brown patinated wood with blackened layered peeling pigment. Losses to right eye opening, some surface wear, may have lost part of suspension loop on top of head.

Food and personal possessions are suspended from the ceiling of the thatched house to protect them from rodents and insects. the objects are placed in string bags which are hung on the twin prongs, the hooks are thought to contain the spirits of ancestors
who protect the objects hung from them. |
